UAM Professor Publishes Book on Philosophy of Science for Psychology Students


Dr. Eric Prichard - Book

Dr. Eric Prichard, associate professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, is the author of a new book, “Philosophy of Science for Psychology Students,” published by Nova Science Publishers.

Written for students and educators, the book explores the dialogue between psychology and philosophy. It addresses key questions about the scientific nature of psychology, including the replication crisis, the influence of positivism and the role of statistical methods. Readers are encouraged to reflect on the assumptions, limitations and complexities of scientific research.

This work builds on his first book, “Under the Paranormal Curve: Comparing Psychology Research Methods to Parapsychological Popular ‘Science,’” which aimed to make psychological research methods more engaging and promote critical thinking about how science is represented in mainstream media.

Dr. Prichard, who joined the UAM faculty in 2016 after completing his graduate studies at the University of Toledo in Ohio, developed a deep interest in the philosophy of science during graduate school. As the field of psychology grappled with a replication crisis, he began to question whether the discipline met the standards of science. These questions turned him to philosophy to explore the assumptions behind scientific methods, such as the idea that natural laws are consistent or that data is inherently objective.

This philosophical shift not only reshaped his understanding of science but also began to influence the way he approached teaching and mentoring students. Through his courses in statistics and research methods, Dr. Prichard emphasizes how easy it can be to misinterpret scientific findings, such as treating abstract constructs like intelligence or personality as concrete facts.

When discussing the motivation behind his book, Dr. Prichard stated, “I wanted to create something that would serve as a supplement, encouraging students to think more critically about research methods and the inherent ambiguity that comes with them. My hope is that readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity of scientific inquiry, while also recognizing the importance of questioning assumptions and embracing the uncertainties in our understanding of human experience.”

Dr. Prichard also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Jeanette Braswell, associate professor of psychology at Ouachita Baptist University and former UAM faculty member, who wrote the final chapter of the book. “Dr. Braswell’s insights into the compatibility of psychology and spirituality were invaluable, and her thoughtful approach helped me convey the importance of respecting diverse perspectives within scientific discourse,” he said.
