UAM Awarded $800,000 for Interior Restoration Projects on Visual and Performing Arts Center
The University of Arkansas at Monticello has been awarded a grant of $800,000 from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council (ANCRC) to fund the second phase of a two-part renovation of the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC). Built in 1954 and previously used as the Student Union Building, the VPAC is located on UAM’s Monticello campus and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This grant builds on a previous ANCRC award of $855,012 received in May 2024 for the first phase, which focused on exterior improvements. That phase included roof repairs, restoration of stone veneer, concrete elements and steel windows, installation of new rooftop HVAC units and exterior painting.
The new phase will focus on enhancing the interior of the historic facility, with a target completion date of June 30, 2026. The primary project will entail replacing the building’s mechanical systems and installing new HVAC equipment. Additional work will include renovating the original dining room, which is now used as the band hall. This will involve removing the drop ceiling and interior partitions that were added after 1981. The project will also include the installation of new lighting and acoustical ceiling tiles designed to reflect the original layout of the space.
Dr. Peggy Doss, chancellor of UAM, stated, “We are extremely grateful to the ANCRC for awarding this second grant in support of the second phase of renovations of the Visual and Performing Arts Center. This funding reinforces our ongoing stewardship of a building that holds a meaningful place in UAM’s history. The VPAC has served as a cornerstone of arts education on our campus for decades, and this project will preserve its historical character while ensuring it continues to provide an exceptional environment for instruction, performance and creative growth for years to come.”
