McClay Receives National Kappa Kappa Psi Leadership Award, Chapter Honored
Noah McClay, a recent graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has received the J. Lee Burke Student Achievement Award for Leadership from the Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity in recognition of his contributions during his time at UAM.
Presented to only four members nationwide each year, the award is one of the fraternity’s most prestigious honors. Although he was unable to attend, McClay was recognized on July 18 during the organization’s national convention in Lexington, Kentucky.
The J. Lee Burke Award recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to their chapter and demonstrated exceptional leadership, character and commitment to the fraternity’s values. McClay was nominated following a conversation with Kappa Kappa Psi’s national vice president at a regional convention, where he sought advice on improving chapter outreach and fostering statewide collaboration. McClay’s initiative in organizing the first Arkansas Brotherhood event, which brought together members from all six collegiate chapters in the state, stood out to national leadership.
“I was surprised and so honored to receive this award,” McClay said. “Kappa Kappa Psi has meant so much to me. It’s given me and my fellow chapter brothers opportunities to organize significant events and fundraisers for our band program. Beyond the professional skills, it’s provided a sense of community and deep friendships. These people have truly been my rock for four years, preparing me for my career in music education.”
During his time in Kappa Kappa Psi, McClay held several leadership positions, including coordinating secretary and chapter president.
Dr. Justin Anders, associate professor of music and chapter sponsor of the Zeta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at UAM, praised McClay’s dedication and leadership, stating, “Noah has been a student who consistently exceeds expectations in rehearsal, performance and academic pursuits. As one of our highest-performing students, he maintained academic excellence while serving as field commander and president of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. As a member of the UAM Wind Symphony, his contributions were invaluable. He took the time to help his peers, participated in multiple ensembles and consistently maintained the excellence expected of a high-performing musician and academic. Noah has a bright future in our profession, and I look forward to his contributions to the field of music education. I am proud that he is recognized for his outstanding contributions.”
McClay graduated from UAM in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in music education. He recently accepted a new position as assistant band director at Rivercrest School District in Wilson, Arkansas.
McClay’s national award is the second honor that the Zeta Zeta Chapter at UAM received this year from Kappa Kappa Psi. The chapter was recognized earlier this year with the 2025 Pillar of Brotherhood Award by the Southwest District of Kappa Kappa Psi. Presented during the district’s annual convention, the award honors a chapter that demonstrates Kappa Kappa Psi’s ideals through impactful service, strong internal unity and a lasting influence on its band program.
The chapter was commended for mentoring new members, leading through staff transitions and coordinating major events, such as the annual UAM Marching Band Invitational. It has also maintained an active and consistent presence in supporting campus and regional music initiatives.
“The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi works diligently for the betterment of the UAM Band and the Division of Music at large,” Dr. Anders said. “As the chapter sponsor, I am elated to see the chapter’s efforts receive this level of national recognition. This award is a point of pride and will also serve as a benchmark for future members.”
