Looking to grow something meaningful this spring? The University of Arkansas at Monticello College of Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resources invites the community to take part in the statewide “Free Tree Friday” event on Friday, April 3, 11 a.m. to 1p.m.
Individuals may receive up to five free bare-root tree seedlings at the giveaway, which will be held in the parking lot of UAM’s H.H. Chamberlin Forest Resources Complex on Forestry Court in Monticello.
Seedlings include a mix of native species, such as pecan, sycamore, overcup oak and Shumard oak. Because the seedlings are distributed as bare root, proper planting is important for success. Planting and species selection guides are available on the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s website.
“Free Tree Friday” is a statewide initiative led by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture, with CFANR serving as the Monticello host site for Arbor Day. Funding for the program is provided by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Agriculture.
The event promotes tree planting while highlighting the environmental and community benefits trees provide, supporting broader urban and community forestry efforts across Arkansas.
“As we have for the past four years, it’s a great opportunity to partner with the Arkansas Forestry Division for this event,” said Michael Blazier, dean of the UAM College of Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resources. “It’s an important part of our campus’s annual celebration of Arbor Day.”
Community members are encouraged to attend, pick up their free seedlings and help make a lasting impact one tree at a time.
