How Bicycles Work

National Bicycle History Archive of America

In fall 2006, a new idea rode onto campus in the form of the Wandering Weevil Wheels.

“The most efficient form of transportation is a condor flying,” said Dr. Gary Marshall, professor of Speech. “Second is a human being on a bicycle.”

Be a part of Boll Weevil history and keep your organization's bike rolling long after cars no longer roam the campus. Any student or organization can help with the bikes. Once your organization fixes a bike, it can be painted with Weevil green colors in any design you want. Add your insignia or just pinstripe the bike!

Want to see pictures of what other groups have done? Check out the facebook site for the Wandering Weevil Wheels and keep close tabs on what's happening. Special thanks to Josh Pettigrew for our logo!

The project started with an initial donation of 10 bicycles from the city of Monticello and various community members from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Student groups adopted a bicycle and stripped it down. J.B. Smith's Body Shop donated time and effort to prime the bikes, then the groups painted and rebuilt them.

The first Wandering Weevil Wheels bicycle appeared at the Creative Society's annual Mocha Madness in Spring 2007. Special thanks to Eric Bell for his efforts in rebuilding it. Although it was not ready to ride, it reminded the campus that the project continues.

Enthusiasm initially ran high, with the Creative Society, Journalism Club, Ambassadors and Institute Management Accounting adopting bicycles. But school got in the way and only the Journalism Club's bicycle stands ready to ride beginning fall 2007. Considering that UAM will become a pedestrian campus as part of its Master Plan, we need help!

Unfortunately, we've lost our technical expertise when Dr. "Buck" DeFee left the campus. If you're interested in providing expertise or, better yet, in adopting a bicycle, contact Dr. Gary Marshall at marshall@uamont.edu or Dr. Ronald Sitton at sitton@uamont.edu
