MONTICELLO, AR — A mixed media exhibit by Arkansas artist Thomas Fernandez is on display through April 6 in the Glassblock Gallery of the Taylor Library and Technology Center at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Gallery hours are Monday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fernandez will be on the UAM campus April 7 for an artist’s talk at 1 p.m. in the design lab of the Visual and Performing Arts Building.
According to Tom Richard, professor of art at UAM, the Fernandez exhibition is influenced by “the artist’s need to preserve the memories of those he loves.” According to Richard, the images use a combination of drawing and photography to blur a line between documentary and sentimentality, creating an extensive archive of drawings and other mixed-media on paper.
A native of Arkadelphia, Fernandez is a member of the art faculty at Arkansas State University-Beebe. He holds a BFA in drawing and mixed media from Henderson State University. In 1999 he had his first solo exhibition, participated in his first group exhibition, and acquired gallery representation after graduating. He then went on to study at the University of Idaho and Charles University in Prague for his MFA.
