The library provides its users with access to a vast variety of information resources through the use of publicly accessible computers. It is incumbent upon all individuals– university faculty, staff, students, and guests–to use these resources in an appropriate and reasonable manner.
Through these resources, the library is committed to providing an atmosphere that promotes research and intellectual freedom, encourages access to knowledge, and allows sharing of information.
The computer workstations, including those with Internet access, are
primarily for the use of university students, faculty, and staff for educational
and research purposes. The general public (community members and students from
other institutions) may use the workstations for educational and research
purposes.
The following are deemed acceptable uses of the equipment and/or software:
Searching the Web for personal interest is acceptable, while library staff reserves the right to give priority of access to those using the workstations for educational and research purposes.
Using online databases and library catalog for library resources.
Using the Web to access e-mail accounts or university-related communications software.
Creating and posting Web pages on the university server that are consistent with the standards and mission of the university.
The following are deemed unacceptable uses of the equipment and/or software (For a complete list, see the UAM Computer Use Policy):
Unauthorized use of another person’s account or identity, or the misrepresentation of one’s own identity, during information exchange through electronic communications.
Using the Internet to engage in private commercial enterprises.
Creating, displaying, or transmitting threatening or harassing messages or images; or displaying obscene, lewd, or sexually harassing messages or images.
Unauthorized manipulation or vandalism of local or remote files on university computers or on the university network; or similar unauthorized access (hacking) to any other system.
Users are asked to limit searches to thirty minutes if others are waiting to use a workstation. Food and drink are prohibited at all workstations.
Access to all information resources, including the online resources at the library, is a privilege and must be treated as such by all users of the system to protect the rights of the community. Use of these resources, including computer equipment and software, by all interested parties must be in a manner consistent with pertinent University policies, procedures, and codes of conduct, in addition to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
Disciplinary action for violating these guidelines shall be governed by the applicable provisions of the UAM Student Handbook, the UAM Faculty/Staff Handbook, the UAM Computer Use Policy, and state and federal laws.
