Ford Senior Staff Writer The University of Arkansas at Monticello purchased the Trotter House Bed & Breakfast located on 404 North Main Street in Monticello March 8. Though the house still serves its traditional purpose as an inn, it will also be used as a laboratory for the university’s new hospitality management program already underway on the Colleges of Technology in Crossett and McGehee. “After the purchase, we first contracted with a foundation repair company to add supports under the house to stabilize the foundation,” said Jay Jones, the vice chancellor for finance and administration. “We also had some work performed to level the floors in certain places. Then, we completely tore off the porch and poured new footings and foundations for supports for the columns.” The university recently completed underpinning the house again and continues with the process of replacing the fence. The initial phase of work on the house will be finished once its exterior receives a painting and the rotten fascia boards get replaced. Manager Steve Davis said reservations started out slow but recently improved with events such as weddings and receptions. “If people want to come visit, they can come take a tour and look,” Davis said. The Trotter House offers four guest rooms, each with a
private bath, telephone, voice mail, cable television and individual
climate control. Each
room received its name after a tree indigenous to the Monticello area:
Magnolia, Cypress, Dogwood and White Oak. Each room costs $60 per night
except for Magnolia, which costs $75 per night as it features a
king-size bed and Jacuzzi tub. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2007 Revised 09/26/2007 07:50:05 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/5_4/trotter.htm |
