Top Gifts this Christmas

Scott Allison Richardson
Contributing Writer

When most people think of Christmas, of course they commonly think of family, food and friends.  But, another major tradition involves presents.

Now, we have all heard the saying, "it is better to give, than to receive."  The question remains, what to give?

We shop, striving to purchase gifts we think the recipient will like.  Their personality plays a big role in our choice of the “perfect” gift.

If they are the person that has one of everything, is picky, or if you’re just unsure about their interests, one option can help.  Researching the most popular gifts of the year provides the gift-giver a better sense of insurance that the gifted will enjoy it.

A list of the top ten gifts that could be useful for purchasing a well liked item includes:

  1. Apple’s iPhone
  2. Laptops/computers
  3. Gaming systems such as the Wii and Playstation 3
  4. Ipods
  5. Digital Cameras
  6. Plasma Flat Screen TVs
  7. Guitar Hero video game
  8. GPS/Navigation Device for the car
  9. Halo 3 video game
  10. Under Armor video game

Electronics have, overall, proved a very popular item this year.  However, if you are on a tight budget, items and suggestions that cost less than $25 include:

  1. DVDs and CDs - consider drama, action, horror or even biographies.
  1. Team logo items such as sleeping pants and coffee mugs.
  1. Hunting accessories, like duck calls or camouflage T-shirts.
  1. Picture frames - especially with a picture that is meaningful to the person you are giving to.
  1. Purses - to add a personal touch, try putting their name on it, or their initials.
  1. Scarf sets - which usually contain a hat, scarf and gloves.
  1. Magazine subscriptions - such as Glamour, ESPN, and GQ.
  1. Cologne or Perfume - You can usually find smaller, more inexpensive bottles in this price range.
  1. Gift baskets - there are many varieties to choose from, like bath products or fruit assortments.
  1. Candles - are always well liked.  Some popular brands include Yankee, Bath and Body Works and the Wood Wick candles.

If all else fails, gift certificates remain a good option; they allow the individual to pick out something they want.  And if the certificate comes from a restaurant, they can enjoy dinner at a time convenient for them.
