Academic Assembly Meets for Review

   The University of Arkansas – Monticello Academic Assembly met on Thursday, Nov. 2 in the Memorial Classroom Building Auditorium. The meeting, chaired by Professor of English Kate Stewart, offered recent reports by several university committees. 

   Marsha Clayton, associate professor in Business Administration, presented 65 proposals for approval. The proposals offered additional courses and new requirements to each field of study and modified or deleted many of the existing courses. Academic Affairs presented three proposals to clarify the catalogue. The Division of Agriculture presented four proposals, which added three classes and modified requirements.

   The School of Arts and Humanities presented 35 proposals, which changed current requirements in the areas of Speech, English and Art majors and minors. The Division of Computer Information Systems presented a proposal to modify course titles and descriptions. The School of Education presented 22 proposals clarifying and modifying the Middle Childhood and P-4 Early Childhood majors. The School of Social Behavioral Sciences proposed a minor in Sociology.  All proposals received approval. 

  • The Crossett College of Technology’s welding program received $10,000 from the Crossett Economic Development Foundation.
     
  • A report on the Eight Semester Rule showed that out of the 61 students that entered the program 11 percent became disqualified with 7 percent of the student body participating in the program.
     
  • GPA requirements for admissions in the Teacher Education Program could possibly change from 2.75 to 2.65.
     
  • Academic Appeals reported 34 appeals filed, 17 denied, 15 accepted and one received no action.
     
  • Fred J. Taylor Library and Technology Center attendance increased and its new Web site offers an opportunity for increased research.
     
  • The Salary Study Committee obtained the relative data needed for the Monticello campus and further study remains in progress.

   Chancellor Jack Lassiter congratulated both the Society of American Foresters and the Debate and Forensics Team on their success earned in competition this year. He informed members of the plans for the Centennial Campaign in 2009 and proudly announced that the athletic team performed their drug tests this year and all proved negative. 

   Several announcements followed informing members of future events on campus, which included the Alpha Chi initiation ceremony on Nov. 14, the Rockefeller Lecture Series on March 28 with special guest Robert Kennedy Jr., a faculty recital on Nov. 7 and the Music Theatre Workshop presenting “An Evening with Gilbert and Sullivan” Nov. 10 and 11.
