The Athletic Committee recently recommended English Professor Betty Matthews for the position of Faculty Athletic Representative. Chancellor Jack Lassiter concurred with the committee’s recommendation, making Matthews the new FAR at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. “I know that Dr. Matthews will be a strong advocate for student athletes and will work closely with the athletic staff in support of our programs,” Lassiter said. Matthews’ primary function as FAR will be to serve as a connection between the student athletes and the administration. She will sign off on various NCAA and FAR required documents but will not be the person that determines eligibility. “Accountability is the main thing and I’m just sort of on the sideline as a sponsor for the students, and I help the compliance officer if he needs it,” Matthews said. “I have strong feelings about student athletes. I want to see that they get the proper care and treatment.” She will work with baseball coach Ron Hill, the compliance officer, to insure that UAM complies with NCAA and Gulf South Conference rules. Hill said Matthews was familiar with all the coaches, loved athletics and cared about students. “Dr. Lassiter has a lot of faith in her,” he said. “Coach (Alvy) Early and I look forward to working with her.” Matthews replaces Jay Hughes, who
served as FAR last year but resigned to accept a principal's job at
Monticello Middle School. “I’m delighted to have the position and I’m very interested in athletics; I always have been," Matthews said. “I think there’s a low opinion of athletes and they don’t deserve that. I can represent these kids.” Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 09/13/2006 11:05:03 PM— http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_6/far.htm |
