Weevils Drop Heartbreaker to Buccaneers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- After falling behind 35-29 at the half, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (17-9, 10-5 GSC) staged a furious second-half rally to finally take a lead, only to go scoreless over the game’s final 1:15 as the Weevils fell 66-62 to the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers Feb. 23 in Memphis.

The Weevils trailed through the first half, falling behind by as many as six (23-17) with 6:55 remaining. The Weevils would pull to within one (24-23) after a J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) jumper but the Bucs pulled ahead again and went into the intermission with a six-point (35-29) lead.

As the second-half opened, CBU pushed their lead to nine just ten seconds in as Colin Flynn drained a three-pointer, but the Weevils were able to narrow the gap to one (44-43) after a Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) three-pointer, eventually taking the lead for the first time (54-53) after a lay-up by Brandon Mayweather (Sr., Crossett, Ark.) with 7:03 remaining.

The Weevils took their last lead (61-60) on a Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas) layup with 3:50 remaining, but were unable to hold on as the Bucs held on for a close victory.

The Weevils return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, as they host Ouachita Baptist University on senior night. A 2 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

Five Score in Double Figures as Weevils Knock off Bears

The Boll Weevils placed five players in double figures in a 69-60 win over the University of Central Arkansas Bears Feb. 20 at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Weevils raced out to a 10-0 lead over the first seven minutes, pushing ahead by as many as 11 (25-14) with 5:44 remaining, and carried a 10-point (33-23) lead into halftime after a McDaniel jumper with eight seconds remaining in the opening half.

UCA pulled to within one (40-39) with 11:45 remaining in the half, but the Weevils went on a 11-1 run to take a 12-point (51-39) lead just three minutes later, and while UCA would pull to within three points (57-54) with 3:45 remaining, the Weevils were able to hold the Bears at arm’s length the remainder of the way to seal the victory.

McDaniel’s 17 points led all scorers. Mayweather, Williams and DeMarcus Wilson (Sr., Lancaster, Texas) all scored 11 points while Torre Doty (Jr., Austin, Texas) added 10 points. McDaniel added a game-high 13 rebounds.

Stephin Booth had 14 points to lead all UCA scorers.

UCA held a 37-32 rebounding advantage on the night, but the Weevils managed to shoot 52.9 percent from the floor for the game versus UCA’s 37.9 percent.
