Sports Information Director Weevils Split on Final Day of UM Tourney MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (12-2) earned a split on day two of the University of Montevallo tournament Feb. 20, topping Kentucky Wesleyan 9-3 and falling to host Montevallo 13-4 in the finale. In the opener, the Weevils used three hits by Ryan Pilcher (So., West Monroe, La.) and 7 1/3 solid innings from Tex Webster (Jr., Hobbs, N.M.) to earn a victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. The Coyotes scored first win a run in the top of the second inning, but UAM struck back, tying the game on an RBI single by Enrique Odreman (Jr., Caracas, Venezuela) and taking a 2-1 lead on a Pilcher double. The Weevils added four runs in the fourth, as Cody Tornberg (Sr., Houston, Texas) opened scoring with a two-RBI double to push the UAM lead to 4-1. UAM would add two more runs in the inning on a pair of wild pitches. The Coyotes narrowed the UAM lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Weevils once again responded, with a Cody Ellis (Sr., Bullard, Texas) homer to lead off the bottom of the inning. UAM added runs in the seventh and eighth to seal the victory, and Jarrett Chasse (Jr., Invermere, B.C.) threw 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief to seal the win. Webster improved to 3-0 after allowing three runs, one earned and fanning three. The finale seemed to start well for the Weevils, as Jason Beck (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) opened scoring in the top of the first inning against Montevallo with an RBI single. Ryland Kathrein (So., Chilliwack, B.C.) and Jay Livingston (Sr., Regina, Sask.) added RBI singles to give the Weevils a 3-0 lead. Daniel Howard (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) suffered the loss after giving up six runs in five innings. The Weevils return to action Saturday, Feb. 25 as they travel to Memphis to face Crichton College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
