Weevils drop heartbreaker to Statesmen
Despite a 17-point, 11-rebound effort from Billy McDaniel (Sr.,
Hearne, Texas), the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils
(15-8, 8-4)
were unable to top the No. 9 Delta State University Statesmen, falling 63-60 in
a
Feb. 9
heartbreaker at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Statesmen led throughout most of the first half, pushing ahead
by five (24-19) after a Jeremy Richardson three-pointer with 5:26 remaining.
However, the Weevils clawed back as time wound down, taking the lead (27-26)
with 1:39 remaining in the opening half after a layup by J.B. Williams (Jr.,
Compton, Calif.). However, Jasper Johnson put DSU back on top going into the
half with a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining.
The Weevils started the second half on fire, as McDaniel and
Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers to push ahead by four, and Brandon
Mayweather (Sr., Crossett, Ark.) followed up with a layup to give UAM a
six-point (35-29) lead.
The Statesmen clawed back, retaking the lead and pushing ahead by
four, when the Weevils took advantage of a fast break to retake the lead (56-55)
after a Mayweather dunk with 3:41 remaining in the game.
DSU reclaimed the lead for good with 1:53 remaining after Turmaine
Rice converted the first end of a one-and-one situation.
McDaniel led the Weevils with 17 points and a game-high 11 boards.
Williams added 15 points while Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) added 11
points. DSU's Jeremy Richardson and Jasper Johnson scored a game-high 20 points
apiece.
The Weevils take a week off before playing Southern Arkansas
University Feb. 16 in Magnolia. An 8 p.m. tip-off from the W.T. Watson Athletic
Center is scheduled.
