Regional math contest attracts 236

   Two hundred thirty-six students from 12 southeast Arkansas junior and senior high schools competed in five categories at the 27th annual Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Contest hosted March 12 by the University of Arkansas at Monticello.       

   The winners of each category and students with the highest rated honorable mention scores are eligible to compete for cash scholarships and other awards at the ACTM State Contest April 23 in Conway.

   Schools represented at the regional contest were Monticello Middle School, Monticello High School, Star City High School, McGehee High School, Dermott High School, Lake Village Lakeside Middle School, Hermitage High School, Rison High School, Warren High School, DeWitt High School, Smackover High School, and Kingsland High School.

   The top three students in each category of competition were:     

  • Algebra I: Brittany Dees of Hermitage (first), Rogal McCloyen of Lake Village Lakeside (second), and Samantha Adams of Lake Village Lakeside (third).

  • Algebra II: Andy Mannis of DeWitt (first), Anna Newberry of Monticello (second), and Katie McDaniel of Monticello (third).

  • Geometry: Bo Kelley of Monticello (first), Mac Holderfield of Rison (second), and Trey Fish of DeWitt (third).

  • Precalculus/Trigonometry: Brandon Blackwell of Smackover (first), Trey Burch of Monticello (second), and Jacob Carter of DeWitt (third).

  • Calculus: Cash McCarty of Rison (first), Sydney Yeager of Smackover (second), and Rachael Newberry of Monticello (third).
