Safety/Decorum
Commencement is a time to celebrate your achievements, but it is also a formal and ceremonial occasion. Graduates are expected to honor the dignity of the event by conducting themselves with respect—for their guests, the guests of others, and fellow graduates.
To maintain the decorum of the ceremony, graduates must refrain from any unsafe or disruptive behavior, including but not limited to:
- The use of noisemakers or loud devices
- Taking selfies while on the Commencement platform
- Pranks, dancing, stepping, stomping, hopping, chanting, or other vocal or visual disruptions
Graduates should proceed across the stage and return to their seats in a measured, safe, and professional manner. The time for more exuberant celebrations is after the ceremony, once all graduates have exited the facility.
To help commemorate this special day, the University has designated a Weevil Celebration area for student groups and Greek organizations at the southeast corner track area on Visitor’s Side in Leslie Cotton Boll Football Stadium.
10 a.m. Ceremony: Doors at Steelman Field House will open to guests at 9:00 a.m. Please be seated by 9:50 a.m. as the processional will begin promptly as 9:55 a.m. Guests who have not entered the gym when the processional starts will not be allowed to enter until the processional has finished. Morning guests are asked to vacate the premises as soon as possible to allow for setup of the afternoon ceremony.
As required by law, UAM has developed and submitted to the Arkansas State Police a security plan for all athletic events held on campus. Part of the approved plan stipulates that "all bags carried into the event will be checked." Signage reflecting the policy and a police officer will be located at each entrance of athletic facilities during an event. Please note that signage is also at entrances prohibiting the possession of weapons by any private individual, including Enhanced Concealed Handgun Carry holders. If you have any questions, please feel free to call (870) 460-1083.
Due to visibility concerns, please do not bring balloons into the facility.
Photography: For your convenience, UAM has secured a professional photographic service to take photos of each graduate as they receive their degrees. One photo will be mailed to each graduate free of charge. These will be mailed with diploma certificates at the end of February or the first of March for December graduates. Alumni Affairs will provide a photo location by the bell at Weevil Pond. Student Programs and Activities will provide Greek letter photo stations along the sidewalk on the northside of the Weevil Pond.
Parking will be available in lots around the campus. Accessible parking is available at Steelman
Field House. Golf cart transportation to Steelman Field House will be provided to
campus guests.
