Thanks for becoming a part of The Voice, the University Arkansas at Monticello's bi-weekly online news source. Staff meetings will be held Mondays from 11 a.m. - noon in 106 Wells Hall. As you can see from the faces above, previous staffs set the bar pretty high for you. They took the same classes, faced some of the same challenges and walked away with statewide recognition. That's your goal. The multi-faceted organization allows students to participate in a wide array of functions. Participation requirements include regular attendance at meetings, the ability and willingness to follow through on assignments, and a commitment to detail. You should be familiar with everything appearing in the student publication's handbook. This handbook presents all UAM student media policies and procedures in a clear, easily referenced manner. Reading it will make you aware of how student publications operates. The handbook conveys requirements of each and every member of the staff. It lists everything from general policies and procedures to writing tips and sample forms. Revisions to the handbook should occur every year as new rules, regulations and problems occur. The handbook acts merely as guide. For further reference, consult the Associated Press Style book, other journalism reference guides or your faculty adviser.
Will Whiting originally compiled much of this material in March 2004, adapting much of its material from Arkansas State University’s Herald Staff Manual. The Herald has been a success at ASU for more than 15 years. In addition, information from the Society of Professional Journalists, College Journalism Workshops and various text sources were used to compile this guide. Due to our rotating staff, this manual should serve as a guide for future editors and staff members alike. Dr. Ronald Sitton, adviser to the UAM student media, originally revised the manual over Christmas Break 2004. Editor-in-Chief Brooke Burger updated the document for Fall 2007. Sitton updated the guide in summer 2011 and summer 2012.
If you don't understand something in this Web note, please e-mail Dr. Sitton.
