Through April 29 - The Harrison, Ark., college rodeo will end the University of Arkansas at Monticello rodeo team's season. Qualifiers for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals will compete this summer representing UAM.

May 1 - A donation car wash benefiting two women's basketball seniors begins at 10 a.m. behind the Baptist Collegiate Ministries building. The car wash USA Athletes International Inc. selected center Wendy Young and guard Theresa Tran to participate in international Olympic-style sporting events in Amsterdam, Belgium and Holland for a week and a half starting May 23.

May 1 -- "Safe Fun in the Sun" Sand Volleyball Tourney at the Gibson University Center's Sand Volleyball Courts from 3 p.m. until dark. May 2 - FBI recruiter Margaret Harris will meet with students Tuesday in the Memorial Classroom Building Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the requirements to become an FBI agent and the various positions offered. Interested students within disciplines of criminal justice, accounting and computer information systems are strongly encouraged to attend.

May 2 -- The Student Government Association installs new officers at 12:40 p.m. in the Senate Dining Room of the Gibson University Center.

May 2 - Matthew Reynolds, a research assistant at the Arkansas Archeological Survey's Henderson State U. Station in Arkadelphia, will discuss "Caddoan Indian Mounds" at 7:15 p.m. at the Forestry Conference Center. This past January and February, Reynolds supervised excavations by Arkansas Archeological Society avocational volunteers, survey staffers and HSU students at a mound site on the Caddo River in northern Clark County. So far, the excavation has yielded evidence of prehistoric dwellings including artifacts such as pottery vessels and pipes, which Reynolds will show at his program. May 9 - Deadline to return library materials. The replacement fee is $50 per item.

May 10 - Deadline for current international students to notify Admissions director Mary Whiting of summer plans. If you're planning to leave the United States this summer, Whiting will need to sign your I-20 by this date. All grades/hours will be checked at the end of the term to be sure compliance is maintained. If you have concerns or have any changes to your current information on file, e-mail Whiting at whitingm@uamont.edu.

May 12 -- Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. In case of inclement weather, commencement will move to Steelman Fieldhouse.

May 13 - UAM Football Annual 4-Man Scramble Golf Tournament begins at 10 a.m. at the Monticello Country Club. Prizes will be awarded to place-winners and door-prizes will be raffled off for all interested attendees. Also, lunch is included with your registration. The funds raised by this tournament go to support UAM football recruiting and other operational expenses. If interested, contact recruiting coordinator Shannon Williams.

May 15 -- Nominations due for UAM's Sports Hall of Fame.

June 5-July 21 - Youth Opportunities Unlimited holds an intensive 46-day summer school and work program on the UAM campus for youth between the ages of 14 and 16. Y.O.U. encourages the completion of high school by providing an environment in which at-risk teenagers have the opportunity to develop basic educational and vocational skills.

June 8-10, July 20-22 - University of Arkansas at Monticello head men's basketball coach Mike Newell will conduct two summer basketball camps for boys and girls ages 7-18 at Steelman Fieldhouse on the UAM campus. The cost of the camp is $95 per session, and all campers will receive camp T-shirts. Newell's camp will accept only 90 campers per session, and one qualified instructor will be on hand for each 15 campers. Newell handles all lectures and will be on hand for the entire session all three days of the camp. For more information, contact the UAM basketball office at (870)460-1258.

July 29 - The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board will hold its regular quarterly meeting Friday at Mid-South Community College’s Magruder Hall in West Memphis. Agendas can be found at www.arkansashighered.com/quarterly.html.

The Foliate Oak announces the release of its latest issue! Currently in the process of developing a new Web page at foliateoak.uamont.edu, the issue will also be posted at the original Web site, www.uamont.edu/foliateoak. Ron Hudson, a senior at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, included a gallery of photographs he took while on deployment to Iraq. These images provide insight to the daily life in the Middle East and show a local insight to a global issue. Don’t forget to come by the Writing Center and pick up a copy of the Best of Foliate Oak Online 2005.

Ambassadors' Beans for Bucks fund-raiser - Regina James won the fund-raiser by guessing 1,350 jellybeans in the jar; it actually held 1,377. The contest supported the Drew County Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

University Pool - The indoor swimming pool is used for a variety of classes and Open Swim. Contact the school of Education (460-1062) for information on classes in swimming, scuba diving and aquatonics. Open Swim is a time designated for eligible users to swim laps or recreate in the pool. The Student Government Association meets from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the U.C. Caucus Room on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Any student or organization needing an issue brought before SGA should e-mail Robin Barker, director of Student Programs & Activities, at barkerr@uamont.edu to get put on the next meeting's agenda.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

The Chess Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. in 316 Babin Business Center.

U.N.I.T.Y meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in 204 Memorial Classroom Building. UNITY is open to all students. For more information, call 460-1743 or e-mail unityclub@uamont.edu.

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch at noon Wednesdays. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

The Creative Society meets Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. outside the Patio Café. Do you like to write, draw, paint, sing, make stuff, or just be around creative people in general? If so, you should join the Creative Society! Anybody with any interest is welcome to come by and check it out. We are looking for a band or musician to play intermission and help us get Mocha Madness started. We also need people to help us make refreshments and set up before it starts.

The Student Activities Board meets from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Gibson University Center Caucus Room on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. The NAACP meets Thursdays at 6 p.m. in Horsfall Hall.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship hosts "Renown" meetings Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts). Come find out about weekly small groups and upcoming events. All students are encouraged to attend.

The Traffic Committee meets the first Thursday of each month.

Drew Country Writers meet on the third Thursday each month in the First Presbyterian Church library at 6:30 p.m. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point.

The Y.O.U. Endowed - Charles Dearman (standing, second from right) recently presented a check for $1,000 to the UAM Foundation Fund to be added to the Loran L. Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund. Loran Johnson of Warren accepts the check from Dearman as (from left) Chancellor Jack Lassiter, Vice Chancellor for Advancement Linda Yeiser and Peggy Doss, dean of the School of Education look on. Dearman, a Warren native, is one of a group of Johnson's former students who are funding the scholarship to honor Johnson, a retired vocational agriculture teacher and founder of the Bradley County Pink Tomato Festival. Funds from the endowment will generate scholarships to be presented to P-4 early
childhood teacher education majors. Scholarship recipients must be from a 14-county area in southeast Arkansas with preference given to students from Bradley, Drew, Lincoln and Cleveland counties. Recipients must pledge to teach in a public school located in one of the 14 counties.

Scholarship Opportunities

Pick up scholarship applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall.

The Association of Arkansas Counties is accepting applications for scholarships until May 1. Applicants MUST:

  • Plan on attending or already be attending college or graduate school;
  • Have a financial need;
  • Show academic merit;
  • Be a graduate of a high school in the state of Arkansas;
  • Be a child, grandchild, adopted child or stepchild of a current or retired county employee of Arkansas.
The Mid-America Science Museum offers a $1,500 scholarship to a qualified college junior or senior majoring in a science or science related discipline, including agriculture, animal science, astronomy, biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, zoology, forest resources and science education. Applicants with a minimum 3.00 grade point average must provide a completed application, an official transcript, two letters of recommendation from faculty and a one-page essay explaining financial need and why she or he chose to study in a science field by May 31.

The Association of Young Journalists and Writers sponsors a Journalism Studies Scholarship, which has been extended to English and closely related majors. Apply for the scholarship at http://ayjw.org/scholarships.php by May 31.

The Arkansas Ambulance Association offers assistance for EMT and Paramedic education. Complete information and scholarship applications are available at www.aaaintouch.com. Apply by June 9 for the fall term.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers a conservation scholarship program of $2,000 per calendar year for freshmen and sophomores, and $3,000 for juniors and seniors. Applicants for scholarship consideration must be Arkansas high school seniors or Arkansas college undergraduates pursuing a career in the field of natural resources and having a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Apply by June 10.

The Drew County Retired Teachers offer a $1,000 scholarship each year. Applicants must be a resident of Drew County, provide a current transcript, submit two letters of recommendation, declare an education major and have at least 30 college hours. Applications due June 15.

The Republican Party offers the following $1,000 scholarships. Apply by June 15.

  • The Elizabeth G. Redman scholarship eligibility requires:
    • A junior or senior majoring in political science, pre-law or journalism;
    • A qualified elector;
    • A member of the National College Republicans.
  • The Bob and Marie Marshall scholarship eligibility requires:
    • Financial need;
    • A qualified elector;
    • Majoring in political science, law or journalism;
    • A member of the National College Republicans;
    • A current junior or senior.
  • The Lillian McGillicuddy Young Republican scholarship eligibility requires:
    • Republican between the ages of 18-40 actively involved in Young Republicans;
    • A qualified elector;
    • Must have a 2.5 GPA or higher;
    • Financial need;
    • Current undergraduate student.

The Arkansas High-Tech Scholarship program plans to award 18 scholarships worth $250 per semester during the 2006-07 year. Winners will study computer information systems at the Monticello campus, or electromechanical technology and industrial processes technology at the Crossett campus. For more information, call the Arkansas High –Tech Scholarship Program at 501 682-1699. Eligibility includes:

  • Must be an Arkansas resident and U. S. citizen;
  • Enroll full-time in 2006-07 in a designated technical program;
  • Demonstrate leadership;
  • Must have a 3.0 gpa and be in good standing;
  • Must apply by July 1.

The SHARE Foundation provides the following scholarship opportunities. Students must submit the application by July 1 for the fall semester and Nov. 1 for the spring 2007 semester. For more information, visit sharefoundation.com or call (870) 881-9015.

  • MCSA Auxiliary Helen Wright Memorial Award—Provides tuition and books for selected students pursuing health care degree options whose permanent residence is within a 40-mile radius of El Dorado.
  • Curtis Kinard Memorial Award—Provides tuition and books for selected students pursuing health care degree options whose permanent residence is within a 100-mile radius of El Dorado.
  • Lucy A. Ring Memorial Award—Provides scholarship opportunities for permanent residents of Union County pursuing degrees in public education or health care.
  • Larkin Wilson Memorial Award—Provides tuition and books for selected students pursuing health care degree options whose permanent residence is located in Union County .

All Stafford Loan Borrowers - If you have borrowed a federal Stafford loan while attending UAM, and you will:
  1. Graduate in May 2006
  2. Transfer to another school following the spring 2006 term
  3. Be enrolled less than half time at UAM during the fall 2006 semester
  4. No longer be enrolled at UAM following the spring 2006 semester
The federal government requires that you completed a mandatory exit counseling session within 30 days of completion of the spring term or within 30 days of withdrawing or falling below half time. Go to http://www.mapping-your-future.org and complete the Stafford exit counseling. You can visit http://www.nslds.ed.gov to access your loan history. Please contact the Financial Aid office at 460-1050 or come by Harris Hall room 300 if you need help with this requirement.

Federal Student Aid Application Process: Do the FAFSA online! FAFSA provides federal student aid to qualifying individuals.

  1. Apply for a Department of Education PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. Parents of dependent students must also have a PIN.
  2. Use the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet prior to completing the on-line FAFSA. Access the worksheet at www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws67c.pdf
  3. Complete the FAFSA on the Internet by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov and following the instructions.
  4. UAM’s school code is 001085.
  5. To insure funds are available for Fall 2006, complete the 2006-07 FAFSA by May 1.
  6. A Student Aid Report will be mailed to students with the results of the Department of Education’s calculations. Read the SAR to be sure no corrections are necessary. If corrections are needed, contact UAM's Financial Aid office.
  7. The Department of Education selects some applications for a process called “verification.” If selected, students will be required to submit certain documents to the Financial Aid office. A notice of required documents will be mailed from UAM. When all required documents have been received, the application will be reviewed for accuracy. After the review process is completed, an award letter will be mailed.
  8. If an award package includes a loan, students must indicate acceptance of the loan and return the award letter to UAM.
  9. First-time borrowers will be required to complete an online loan entrance counseling session and sign a Master Promissory Note.
  10. Only fully-admitted, degree-seeking students can receive Federal financial aid funds.

To receive mailed materials from the university, your permanent mailing address must be accurate. If you’ve had a change in your address, stop by the Registrar’s Office (Harris Hall, first floor) or the Student Services office at Crossett or McGehee to complete a "Change in Student Data" form. The form should also be completed if you’ve had a change in your name, local address, or telephone number. There is no charge for making a change in your data. A photo ID is required when the "Change in Student Data" form is submitted.
