2001 Minutes of the Interpersonal Communication Division Business Meeting

Saturday, April 7, Breckenridge
Radisson Plaza Hotel, Lexington, Kentucky

Division Chair Judy Carter called the meeting to order at 2:46.

OLD BUSINESS:

Minutes: Minutes from the 2000 business meeting in New Orleans were approved.

NEW BUSINESS:

Chair's Report: Judy Carter reported on the Executive Council meeting.

Legislative Report:

There were two constitutional changes discussed in executive council meeting and approved in the general business meeting:

  1. A Publication committee was formed with duties to include recommending journal editors to the executive council and selecting recipients for the Johnson Article Award.
  2. Clarification: People elected to serve on the SSCA Nominating Committee would begin their service at the following convention.

The Minority Recruitment & Retention Award Committee proposal was tabled so criteria for the award could be developed.

There was an error, this year, in electing the NCA Legislative Council Representative from SSCA. One of the members should have been from a community college. The error will be corrected by having a community college person in the rotation next year.

Judy previewed upcoming convention sites. The 2002 convention will be in Winston Salem, North Carolina with Wake Forrest hosting. The 2003 convention will be now be in Birmingham, AL (not in Gulf Port Biloxi as originally planned). The site for the 2004 convention will be Tampa, FL. Hotel negotiations are still underway. Judy urged members to talk with Time & Place members if they are interested in hosting in future years.

Vice-Chair Report: Jerry Hale reported that the division received lower submission rates than in the recent past, but concluded that all submissions were of good quality. The division sponsored a total of 4 panels this year. Division members were urged to show their support by submitting their work for the 2002 convention. Judy Carter added that submission rates were down across divisions.

Vice Chair Elect: J.D. Ragsdale opened the floor to a discussion of panel ideas for SSCA's 2002 convention in Winston Salem, NC. Members' suggestions included forming panels of non-competitive and invited papers, and having a "Best of the Rest" panel which would include the Top Papers from the other regional associations. Bill Edwards suggested targeting teaching faculty and those at 2-year institutions with panels of ideas for teaching and co-sponsoring a panel with Community College. A discussion ensued about Poster Sessions, but it was concluded that these are usually reserved for occasions in which there are an abundance of submissions. Bill Edwards suggested that in the call we accept abstracts and works-in-progress as well. Members asked if the deadline could be later, but Jerry reminded members of the need to maintain the deadline due to the tight schedule in paper reader turnaround time. Members further suggested undergraduate student panels, and J.D. stated his willingness to panel work of undergraduate students as long as members assured him of their confidence in the quality of the papers that would result. Other suggestions included corporate communication, interpersonal communication in mediation, conflict resolution, and business practice. Last year's minutes were reviewed for prior suggestions for the call for papers.

Elections: Rodney Reynolds was elected as vice-chair elect. Melissa Young was elected as Secretary and will begin a 2-year term at the 2002 business meeting. Members willing to serve as paper readers were asked to sign a sheet at the business meeting so they could be recruited as need warranted. The Vice-Chair will select paper readers from this list as needed. A list of members who noted willingness to also serve in the capacity of panel chairs and/or respondents will be forwarded to the Vice-Chair. The division Nominating Committee for 2001-2002 will be: Tamara Bollis-Pecci, Judy Truitt, and Rodney Reynolds. Richard Conville will begin his first year of a 2-year term on the SSCA Nominating Committee and next year we will elect a replacement member for the SSCA Nominating Committee.
