Oral Communication Units and Activities

Interpersonal Communication

Students will be able to

identify types of interpersonal communication.
explain the importance of nonverbal aspects of interpersonal communication.
use the telephone in social and business situations effectively.
prepare for and conduct interviews successfully.
understand the importance of listening empathetically and for comprehension.
solve problems in a shared communication situation.

Activities

  1. Conduct a class discussion on the nature of interpersonal communication.
  2. Role play informational interviews.
  3. Role play job interviews.
  4. Invite guest speakers from the community (personnel interviewers, military recruiters, etc.).
  5. Role play both business and social phone conversations.
  6. Invite guest speaker from telephone company on law/ethics of telephone use.
  7. Role play social introductions.
  8. Conduct a rumor (chain conversation) activity.
  9. Hold nonverbal group activities such as lining up or putting together puzzles without speaking.
  10. Invite counselors to speak on listening and problem- solving techniques.
