Oral Communication Units and Activities

RATE CONTROL

Unit(s): Voice and Diction/Oral Interpretation

Purpose:

The purpose of this exercise is to provide a variety of sentences that require pauses and changes in rate to achieve meaning.

Objective:

The students will demonstrate the use of pauses and rate changes in a variety of sentences.

Materials:

List of sentences requiring a variety of rate changes and pauses.

Procedure:

  1. Hand out copies of sentences to each student.
  2. Have students work in pairs on the oral presentation of each sentence.
  3. After a few minutes ask for volunteers to read the sentences in front of the class.
  4. Challenge students by asking if there are other ways to read each sentence and how would the meanings be changed with these new interpretations.



Exercise - Rate Control

Read the following sentences rapidly or slowly as the meaning suggests.

  1. Watch out! It's hot.
  2. Please let me do it.
  3. They trudged wearily up the trail.
  4. Come as quickly as you can.
  5. The fried pheasant is delicious.
  6. What a beautiful view you have from this window.
