Oral Communication Units and Activities

"SHOT SHEET"

Unit(s): Mass Communication

Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to familiarize students with the techniques and language of televison production.

Objective:

Students will be able to prepare a camera shot sheet for a television production of an animated nursery rhyme.

Materials:

  1. Handout "Camera Shot Sheet"
  2. Television
  3. Videotaped television commercial

Procedure:

  1. Define the following terms with students:

    a. close-up - CU
    b. tight close-up - TCU
    c. extreme close-up - ECU
    d. medium shot - MS
    e. long shot - LS
    f. extreme long shot - ELS
    g. low angle
    h. high angle
    i. establishment shot - ES
    j. point of view - POV
    k. over-the-shoulder shot - OS
    l. dolly
    m. pan
    n. tilt
    o. zoom
    p. cut
    q. fade
    r. dissolve - DISS
    s. wipe
    t. edit

  2. Watch a television commercial or part of a program to identify various types of shots.
  3. Give the students the handout "Camera Shot sheet" to examine as a model.
  4. Ask them to prepare a shot sheet for a 30-second animated production of heir favorite nursery rhyme.
  5. Encourage student to select shots that best convey the particular idea or image, to include a variety of shots, to provide sufficient information about each shot, and to enter the shots in the proper sequential order.
  6. This is a good partner or group assignment.
