Oral Communication Units and Activities

Are You Sure?

Unit(s): Communication Process

Purpose:

To explore the ways that we read nonverbal feedback

Objectives:

To make students more aware of the types of nonverbal feedback they may reveal to the sender

Materials:

None

Procedure:

  1. Assign students to bring in large (8 x10) pictures, mounted on construction paper, of listeners giving positive, negative and ambiguous nonverbal feedback.
  2. Students will share his/her pictures with the class.
  3. Discuss the kinds of feedback shown. Is it difficult to interpret the feedback? Why? How does ambiguous feedback interfere with effective communication? In what different ways is positive feedback shown? In what ways is negative feedback shown?
