Costume Renderings

Unit(s): Fundamentals of Play Production/Costuming

Purpose:

To introduce students to the concept of creating costumes to fit a character in a play

Objective:

The student will produce a color costume rendering appropriate for a character in a play.

Materials:

  1. Pencils, colored pencils
  2. Tracing Paper
  3. Pattern books (clothes catalogs)
  4. Play
  5. Costume Analysis Form (attached)

Procedure:

Together students read aloud a play in class. Discussion following the play reading should center on internal and external influences for costumes.

A. External Period

a. Time of year
b. Geographical location
c. Economic status
d. Character occupation

B. Internal

a. Age
b. Personality
c. Relation to other characters

Have each student complete a Costume Analysis Form.

  1. Using the pattern books, students will find and trace a costume for their character. At this time, alterations should be made from the picture. Very seldom will students find the exact costume. They will need to alter the picture.
  2. The finished picture should be in color with the following information in the lower right hand corner:

    A. Date
    B. Play Title
    C. Character: Act and Scene
    D. Designer: Student's name

  3. If possible, fabric swatches can be stapled in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Do not fill in facial features. Leave the face blank. Do put in hair and all the body parts. Do not trace a figure that has no feet or hands. Mount tracing on the back of a piece of construction paper.
