Purpose:
To synthesize the skills necessary to effectively communicate thoughts from the printed page to an audience
To gain poise and self-confidence in a formal communication situation
Objectives:
Students will analyze selections of literature and adapt poetry selection for oral interpretation.
Students will compose introductions for each poem.
Students will demonstrate application of effective eye contact with the audience when using a manuscript.
Materials:
- Poetry Anthologies
- Worksheet for poetry (attached)
Procedure:
- Discuss characteristics of poetry appropriate for reading aloud. Possibly invite a performer to present a selection to the class.
- Allow students to peruse anthologies and library materials to select a poem.
- Give students a worksheet for poetry analysis and ask them to complete it.
- Guide students in the preparation of effective introductions.
- Allow preparation time in class.
- Give each student a written critique of his/her performance.
