Drama Units and Activities

Ready, Set, Readers' Theatre

Unit(s): Voice and Diction

Purpose:

To display an understanding of the style, techniques, and blocking of Readers' Theatre

Objectives:

Students will define Readers' Theatre terminology.

Students will write, type, and memorize a Readers' Theatre script.

Students will prepare and perform a Readers' Theatre.

Materials:

  1. Completed Readers' Theatre scripts
  2. Videotapes of completed Readers' Theatre projects.
  3. Access to library materials for writing and/or compiling scripts.
  4. TV and VCR

Procedure:

  1. Begin by defining Readers' Theatre terminology with students. Present a lesson or an entire unit on Readers' Theatre theory and techniques including the following information:

    A. Styles of Readers' Theatre
    B. Selection and arrangement of material
    C. Voicing and staging techniques
    D. Rehearsal techniques

  2. Allow student to peruse completed scripts and view videotapes of completed Readers' Theatre projects.
  3. Assign groups and provide class time for writing and arranging a Readers' Theatre script.
  4. Ask students to schedule and plan effective rehearsals. Ask them to create effective blocking and movement for their Readers' Theatre. Ask them to design uniform costumes for Readers' Theatre. Provide class time for rehearsal.
  5. Allow students to perform for classmates.
  6. Give each group a critique of their performance.
