Drama Units and Activities

Popular Song Interpretation

Unit(s): Voice and Diction

Purpose:

To improve pronunciation, articulation, voice projection, and diction

Objective:

The student will be able to perform a timed presentation of song lyrics, emphasizing correct pronunciation, articulation, voice projection, and an understanding of the song's meaning.

Materials:

  1. A variety of song lyrics (Students will be able to provide many of these.)
  2. Teacher should provide some guidelines about content

Procedure:

  1. After setting up guidelines about the lyrics, students should select a song or songs with a single theme (love, honesty, fear, etc.).
  2. Have students write out the lyrics on their own paper.
  3. Set a time limit for the performance and allow students rehearsal time before presentations.
  4. Students perform for a grade based on predetermined criteria chosen by the teacher.

Optional activity:

Students can also be assigned a paper to write in which they describe why they chose the song or songs and what it means to them.
