Drama Units and Activities

Standing, Sitting, Lying, Bending

Unit(s): Stage Movement/Acting

Purpose:

To create an awareness of what scene partners are doing on stage

To develop concentration and creative thinking

Objective:

The students will create dialogue that responds to and explains motivation for spontaneous movement in a scene.

Materials:

  1. Several chairs
  2. Prompts or situations

Procedure:

  1. Send 4 students to the front of the room to perform.
  2. Provide them with several chairs and a situation (i.e. the doctor's office).
  3. Instruct them that at each moment during the scene, one person must be standing, one sitting, one lying, and one bending.
  4. When any person changes his position, the other three must immediately adjust to another position so that there will always be one standing, sitting, lying, and bending at all times.
  5. Remind students that their dialogue must relate to their changes in position.
