Drama Units and Activities

Tag Lines

Unit(s): Acting

Purpose:

To build skills in character and plot development

To develop interaction with other characters and unity around a theme

Objective:

The student will create a character within a scene which will end with a tag line.

Materials:

Students will be given a famous quote. Examples:

A. E.T. phone home.
B. Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
C. Why don't you come up and see me sometime.
D. Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes.

Procedure:

  1. Students will be placed in pairs.
  2. Each pair will be given a famous line or quote which should be the last thing said in the scene.
  3. Students should then be given time to discuss the plot or direction of their improvisation and then perform before the class.
  4. A variation on this activity is to begin the scene with a predetermined opening line given by one actor, carry out the scene. Then the tag line is delivered by the other actor.
