Drama Units and Activities

Once Upon A Time....

Unit(s): Acting

Purpose:

To apply the techniques necessary for effective storytelling by preparing and presenting a story for classmates as well as children

Objective:

The student will select and organize narrative material, write an effective introduction, and demonstrate an ability to handle audience reaction.

Materials:

Scripts and storybooks

Procedure:

  1. The teacher should begin with a lecture on storytelling which should include the following items:

    A. Historical role of storytelling
    B. Types of stories
    C. Selection of material
    D. Narrative sequence
    E. Elements of an introduction
    F. Storytelling techniques
    G. Audience reaction

  2. If possible, invite an experienced storyteller to demonstrate techniques for the students.
  3. Next allow students to peruse available scripts and storybooks to select an appropriate story. Guide them in the preparation of introductions and in rehearsal.
  4. Have each student perform his/her story for the class. Select as many of the better stories as possible to perform for kindergarten classes.
  5. Provide each student with a critique of his/her performance.
