Drama Units and Activities

You and Me Are Family

Unit(s): Acting

Purpose:

The purpose of this exercise is to create a caring, unified environment in which each student can feel his/her own self worth and the need for the assistance of fellow classmates (This exercise is used to introduce the value of UNITY in the process of producing a play.)

Objective:

Students are forced to depend on each other to achieve a common goal and will recognize the strength of working together as opposed to individual achievement.

Materials:

  1. One or two plastic hula hoops
  2. Activity should be done on the stage floor or on a 20' x 20' space.
  3. Students ideally should be dressed in comfortable clothing which does not restrict movement.

Procedure:

  1. Class will stand together in a large circle and hold each other's hands.
  2. One hula hoop will be placed diagonally over the shoulder of one student.
  3. Students are to pass the hula hoop to each other and continue around the entire circle until the hoop returns to the originator. At no time may any student stop holding the hand of their classmate.

Option:

To create competition, divide class in to halves and let both groups complete the exercise while being timed. May the faster group win!
