Unit: Acting
Purpose:
To creatively build characters and a plot for a well-developed scene, based on a painting, drawing, or other visual art.
Objective:
Students will create a scene with unity of plot and characterization. This scene will be developed from observing and analyzing and established painting or other visual art.
Materials:
Pictures, statues, slides, posters, etc. of works of art (modern or classical) for the students to use during the class period.
Procedure:
- Divide the class into groups of 4-7 students per group.
- Either assign each group a piece of art or let each group choose their own art work.
- Then they are to analyze the painting for possible storylines and characters that could be developed based on expressions, mood, settings, and themes established by the painting.
- You can either have the students research the original history of the work and use that information as the basis of their scene, or base the scene entirely on their creative imagination. If the latter is chosen, the choices they make MUST be based on things they find and can support from the work of art.
- A brief report should be turned in by the group, defending their choices based on the work.
- Perform the scene for the class.
