Drama Units and Activities

Musical Mime

Unit(s): Stage Movement

Purpose:

To develop teamwork, creativity, stage movement, control of face and body

Objective:

The students will be able to perform a musical mime with a group, emphasizing stage movement and creative storytelling.

Materials:

  1. The teacher will need to make a tape of instrumental music for each group. The tape can consist of one song or several songs together. Each tape should be approximately the same length.
  2. A tape player will be needed for each group for rehearsal purposes.

Procedures:

  1. Divide the students into groups of 3 to 6 people.
  2. Give each group a tape and tape player.
  3. The group is to come up with a story with goes along with the music. They will not be allowed to use any words. It is a mime.
  4. Have the group write an outline of the story and turn this in when it is time to perform.
  5. Rehearsal time should be 2 to 4 days, depending upon the experience of the students.
  6. Students perform a graded performance based on teacher's criteria. Written outline is turned in at this time.
