MONTICELLO, AR — Six members of the University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team brought home awards from the Festival of Lights Invitational Debate Tournament hosted recently by Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La.
Blake Adkins of Vilonia, Brian Hunter Cook of Sheridan, Natalie Craig of Sherwood, McKenzie McClain of Monticello, Grace Nash of Mount Holley, and Abby Rounsaville of Mabelvale received individual honors at the competition that brought together debate students from 14 colleges and universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri and Colorado.
Adkins, a computer information systems major, was the ninth place speaker in the tournament's professional division. Cook, a criminal justice major, was the third place speaker in the junior varsity division while Craig, a communication major, was the seventh place junior varsity speaker. McClain, an education major, reached the quarterfinals in junior varsity debate while Nash, an English and modern languages major, reached the round of 16. Rounsaville, an education major, was the first place speaker in the junior varsity division and reached the round of 16 in debate.
Others competing or participating were Kyle Hargis, a communication major from Warren, Lou Dylan Hargis, an agriculture major from Warren, and Gabriel McDorman, a communication major from Sheridan, Samhitsi Aumagamamanaia, a communication major from Roswell, N.M., Adeline Bowman, a political science major from Berthoud, Colo., Jordan Lakin, an art major from Cabot, Tracey Lawson, an education major from Tillar, and Keeton Orrell, a political science major from Monticello.
Schools represented in the competition were UAM, Bossier Parish Community College, Colorado Christian University, Drury University, East Texas Baptist, Lee College, Louisiana State, LSU-Shreveport, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, Southern Methodist, Central Arkansas and the University of Tennessee.
