Kate Stewart Is Alpha Chi National Sponsor of the Year

MONTICELLO, AR — Dr. Kate Stewart, professor of English at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has been selected as one of two 2017 Outstanding Alpha Chi Sponsors nationwide.

The award was presented at the Alpha Chi Annual Convention held recently in Louisville, Ky., and was based on outstanding service to the UAM Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national collegiate honor society.

Stewart has served as faculty sponsor of the UAM chapter of Alpha Chi for 20 years. Under her leadership, the organization has achieved Star Chapter status multiple times, which requires an organization to be in good standing, have students present research at the national conference, compete for regional and national scholarships, and engage in service projects in the local community or on campus.

During the 2016-17 academic year, Alpha Chi members participated in the 2016 Annual Bullying Awareness Campaign held on the UAM campus in October, co-sponsored a pajama drive for foster kids in February, and participated in the annual Wellness Fair in March. Three students — Cody Bijou of Crosby, Tex., Reagan Dobbs of Dayton, Tex., and Bronte Pearson of Monticello — presented papers at the 2017 national convention and competed for regional and national scholarships. Pearson won best paper in creative writing while Bijou was runner-up for the Region II scholarship.

Stewart joined the UAM faculty in 1988. She holds a bachelor of arts degree, master of arts degree and Ph.D., from the University of Mississippi.
