Debate Team Takes Second Place Sweepstakes Honors At Tennessee Volunteer Classic

MONTICELLO, AR — The debate team from the University of Arkansas at Monticello placed second in the overall sweepstakes competition at last week’s Tennessee Volunteer Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

            The classic consisted of two tournaments with the results combined to determine the overall sweepstakes winners. Cody Bijou of Crosby, Tex., led the UAM contingent by winning the varsity debate competition in the second tournament. Bijou was a semifinalist in the varsity division in the first tournament.

            Results from the first tournament included Gauge Adkins of Vilonia earning second place speaker honors in the novice division; Jacob Chisom of Monticello, second place speaker in the varsity division; Keith Milstead, assistant director of debate and forensics, second place professional speaker and professional division debate quarterfinalist; Blake Adkins of Vilonia, quarterfinalist in the novice division; and Chris Brown, instructor and assistant debate coach, second place in the professional debate division.

            Results from the second tournament included Chisom earning fifth place speaker honors while reaching the debate semifinals in the varsity division; Reagan Dobbs of Dayton, Tex., fourth place varsity speaker and varsity division quarterfinalist; Milstead, second place professional speaker and professional division semifinalist; and Brown, professional division debate champion.
