UAM Hosts ERZ
Summer Science Camp

MONTICELLO, AR — Junior high and high school students with an interest in
science are studying everything from genes in a bottle to optics, rockets
and holograms at a Summer Science Camp this week at the University of
Arkansas at Monticello.
The camp is being sponsored by the UAM School of Education through an
Education Renewal Zone (ERZ) High School Redesign Grant in collaboration
with UAM’s School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. The camp runs
through Thursday, June 12.
Students from Monticello, Drew Central, Star City, Crossett, Rison and
Woodlawn are spending the week working with UAM science faculty in a number
of areas, including ornithology and mammology, herpetology, a comparison of
the energy produced by various fuels, and rockets, optics, lasers and
holograms.
Public school teachers are also taking part in the camp, which will result
in 24 hours of professional development.
UAM faculty members Drs. Jeff Taylor, Chris Sims, John Hunt, Marvin Fawley,
Karen Fawley, Martha Baskett, Juan Serna, and Jim Edson have volunteered
their time to serve as camp instructors.
The camp is a pilot program with the option to expand next year with
additional grant funding.
