MONTICELLO, AR — Randy and Trudie Bolen of Star City were selected as the
University of Arkansas at Monticello’s “Family of the Year” during
Parent-Family Appreciation Day activities last Saturday.
The Bolen’s were selected from among eight nominated families based on
essays submitted by students. The Bolen’s were nominated for the award by
UAM students Brittany Pickett and Penny Thornton on behalf of the Bolen’s
daughter, Jasmine, a junior English major.
“On behalf of Jasmine Bolen, Penny and I would like to nominate Trudie and
Randy Bolen for Family of the Year,” said Pickett. “Mrs. Bolen not only
encourages and supports her daughter, Jasmine, in the challenges she faces
in school, she encourages and supports us as well. Over the last three and a
half years, there have been days when Jasmine has struggled with school or
worried about how she would pay for school. Her mom and dad have always been
there.”
The Family of the Year presentation was made during a program in the Fine
Arts Center. According to Julie Gentry, coordinator of Parent-Family
Appreciation Day, 309 parents and family members attended the event. Three
families in attendance drove from California, then drove to Arkadelphia to
cheer for their sons at the UAM-Henderson State football game.
