Nursing Program Honored At State Nursing Convention (10/29/08)

MONTICELLO, AR — The Division of Nursing at the University of Arkansas at Monticello received both the Image of Nursing Award and the Community Service Award from the Arkansas Student Nurses Association at the organization’s annual convention in Rogers October 23-24.

The Image of Nursing Award was presented in recognition for UAM nursing students sponsoring a child through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Community Service Award encompassed a variety of projects undertaken by the UAM Student Nurses Association during the past year.

In addition to the two awards, UAM junior nursing student Lauren Thurman of Tillar was elected to the Arkansas Student Nurses Association board of directors and will represent UAM at the national SNA conference in Reno, Nevada November 13-16.

“I’m very proud of our students for bringing honor and recognition to the Division of Nursing,” said Pam Gouner, division chair. “These awards are a positive reflection on our students and our nursing program.”

According to Gouner, all UAM nursing students are part of the Student Nursing Association and participate in fund-raising and community service projects designed to benefit the residents of southeast Arkansas. The UAM SNA won the national Image of Nursing Award last March for a project called “Aid to AIDS in Africa.”
