MONTICELLO, AR — The University of Arkansas at Monticello is moving its
annual homecoming parade from campus to downtown Monticello Thursday
afternoon as part of the university’s centennial celebration.
The “Paint The Town Green” parade begins at 4 p.m. on North Main Street,
winds around the downtown square and concludes on South Main near the Drew
County Historical Museum.
Ray Tiner of Shreveport, 100 years old and a 1929 graduate of what was then
Arkansas A&M, will serve as the parade’s grand marshal.
“Since we are celebrating our 100th birthday, we wanted to do something
special and involve the community in our homecoming activities,” said Carrie
Ashcraft, director of alumni affairs. “We hope everyone will come out and
take part in what should be a fun event.”
The parade will feature the Pride of Southeast Arkansas UAM marching band,
floats by Union Bank, Sesame School and a number of UAM student
organizations, antique tractors and horse-drawn carriages, and an appearance
by Smokey the Bear. Special guests in the parade are Mary Anne Kerr, Miss
Boll Weevil 1959, and Glenetta Burks, Miss A&M Businesswoman of the Year,
1959.
