UAM Hosts High School Speech and Debate Institute 8/10/09

MONTICELLO, AR — The University of Arkansas at Monticello, in a cooperative effort with the Arkansas State Communication Association, hosted the 2009 Arkansas Speech and Debate Institute (ASDI) July 26-31.

The one week residential program brought Arkansas students interested in debate and forensics to the UAM campus for a “fun and intensive jump-start for the upcoming competitive season,” said Scott Kuttenkuler, ASDI director and director of UAM’s nationally-recognized forensics program.

Fifty-four students from 12 junior and senior high schools participated in this year’s program.   Over the course of the week students were challenged to expand their understanding of debate and performance while at the same time building friendships with other competitors and coaches.

The 2009 ASDI was the largest in the program’s three-year history, according to Kuttenkuler. “This was a tremendous year and we were able to put together a top-notch staff that really did a wonderful job,” he said. “The students were exceptional and we are looking forward to watching them as they compete this season. In addition, we would also like to say thank you to the University for its continuing support of the Arkansas Speech and Debate Institute.”

Plans are already underway for next year’s institute.  To find out more information about the ASDI or the UAM Speech and Debate you can check the programs website at www.uamdebate.com.
