Research Databases:

American Song

The source of American roots music and pre-1960 American popular music, American Song, contains the songs of the Civil War, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, Civil Rights, anti-war protests, political campaigns, and more. Liner notes to all the albums are included, as well as static URLs to each track and album in the database. American Song allows people to hear and feel the music from America's past.  Content from African American Music is now a part of American Song Click on Help for information on searching the database.

Classical Music Library

A comprehensive database of distinguished classical recordings, Classical Music Library contains music ranging from medieval to contemporary, and from choral works to symphonies, operas, and the avant-garde, including symphonic music, vocal and instrumental music, chamber groups, and other forms. Includes performances by Placido Domingo, Itzhak Perlman, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Jacqueline du Pré, and many others.  Click on Help for information on searching the database.

Contemporary World Music

Contemporary World Music will contain 50,000 tracks from around the globe, allowing listeners to experience the culture and history of diverse peoples. The collection encompasses Arab swing and jazz, reggae, world fusion, traditional music, and more. Selected labels include Air Mail Music, INEDIT, Playasound, and Crossing Records. Music Online

A comprehensive digital music resource, Music Online provides access to audio, video, scores, and text reference through a single interface. The growing collection includes American Song, Classical Music Library, and Contemporary World Music. Content from African American Music and Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries will be added to the database by September 2009. Click on Help for information on searching the database.

Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries

Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries is a virtual encyclopedia of the world's musical and aural traditions, with an array of more than 35,000 individual tracks of music, spoken work, and natural and human-made sounds.  Listen to performances by Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, and countless others.  Enjoy music from every part of the world.  Click on Help for information on searching the database.

Print Journals:

All print journals, to which the library subscribes, are listed in the online library catalog. To look for a specific journal, search by TITLE. If you are unsure of the exact title, search by KEYWORD to find the title you want.

Electronic Journals:

All electronic journals in the library's collection are listed in the Magazine, Newspaper, and Journal Finder. You can search for a specific title by keyword or browse an A-to-Z list by title or subject. 

Books:

Use the online library catalog to find books. Books may be searched by keyword, title, author, or subject.

To find a specific book, search by TITLE. If your search is unsuccessful or if you are unsure of the exact title, try a KEYWORD search. To find books written by a specific person, search by AUTHOR. To find a book about a specific person or topic, search by SUBJECT. Subject searching requires the use of Library of Congress Subject Headings. If your subject search is unsuccessful, try a KEYWORD search or consult a librarian at daviska@uamont.edu.

Library of Congress Call Number Ranges for Music:

The library's collection of books is organized by subject. Once you locate a call number on the shelves, you can browse other books in the area, as they will contain the same subject.

Borrow Items From Other Libraries:

If the library does not own a publication that you need, we can borrow books and obtain copies of journal article from other libraries.  Submit an interlibrary loan request form online.  Materials may be supplied for free or a fee.  You will generally receive the item within two weeks.
