Call Number: Books in the Fred J. Taylor Library are classified and arranged by the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. The LC System separates the world's knowledge into divisions A-Z with subclasses indicated by letter combinations (AB, AC, etc.) and subtopics indicated by numerical notation.

This "Call Number" should be considered the home address of the book indicating its subject matter and its location in the library stacks. After searching the online catalog and finding the book(s) that you wish to examine further, write down the call number displayed on the screen and locate the stacks which contain your selected book(s).

Book Location

According to the call number you can decide where a book is located in the library. There are four major book locations in the library:

1st floor/2nd floor Main Collection - If nothing appears in front of the call number, the book should be located in the Main Collection. These are mainly circulating materials and can be checked out of the library.

Reference Collection - The header REFERENCE indicates the book is a part of the reference collection. These books are located in the reference area on the first floor and to your right as you enter the library. IN LIBRARY USE ONLY.

Special Collections - Anytime ARK appearsin front of a call number, that indicates the book is located in the William F. Droessler Special Collections Room (formerly the Arkansas Room). Special Collections is located on the upper level of the library. A library staff member has to retrieve the book(s) for you. A UAM ID or Valid Driver's License is required. IN LIBRARY USE ONLY.

Storage - Periodicals and reference books located in designated areas on the first floor.
