Upward Bound Summer Positions

The Upward Bound Program at the University of Arkansas at Monticello is a federally funded college preparatory program serving low-income and/or first generation high school students from eight school districts in Southeast Arkansas. Upward Bound will host a summer residential program and the following positions will be available:

Tutor/Residential Counselor: Duties include living in the residence hall with students and providing a safe, fun, responsible environment; student supervision; assist, instruct and/or participate in enrichment activities and field trips; conduct bi-weekly teambuilding activities with groups of 8-10 high school students; provide tutorial assistance to program participants; file weekly reports on student programs; attend weekly staff meetings; and be on call throughout the program; Applicants who are upper level college students or degreed will be given preference. Employment is from June 19th through August 2nd (includes training and end of summer enrichment trip). Salary: $1,500 plus room and board. Entrance to all enrichment activities and field trips provided.

Teachers: Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and certification in the area of instruction with a minimum of one (1) year teaching experience; Applicants must have the ability to motivate students and assess the needs of high school students as well as be able to monitor and evaluate students’ academic progress; English: must be able to instruct students in language arts, literature, composition and reading comprehension; Mathematics: must be able to instruct students in a range of math courses from Algebra to Statistics; Science: must be able to instruct students in a range of laboratory science courses from Physical Science to Physics; World Language: must be able to design and implement a world language course that will acquaint students with the rudiments of the language with an emphasis on the entire culture and language. All languages will be considered. Employment is from June 23rd through July 26th; Salary: Approximately $2,500.

Part-Time Teachers: Applicants must be able to assess, monitor and evaluate students’ academic needs, as well as plan instructional activities. Employment is from June 23rd through July 26th; Salary: Approximately $1,000.

Recreational Skills Coordinator: Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in physical education; Applicants must develop and direct physical education component and leisure time activities for students; Evening work required; Employment is from June 23rd through July 26th; Salary: Approximately $750.

Van Drivers: Transport students in an 11-15 passenger van to and from the UAM campus, their homes as well as some weekly activities; Eligible drivers must be at least 21 years of age; have a safe, clean driving record (no moving violations or accidents; driving record will be verified); work Fridays, Sundays and on occasion one night during the week; Employment is from June 23rd through July 26th; Salary: $8/hour.

Per University of Arkansas Board of Trustees Resolution and UAM Operating Procedure 297.1 regarding camps/programs which involve minor-aged children at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, all personnel involved in the care and supervision of minors at such camps or programs are required to undergo a criminal background check (including registered sex offender check).
