MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at
Monticello women’s basketball team kept its perfect
season intact with a 92-61 win at home over West Florida
in the final game of the 2nd annual Dr. Mary Jane
Gilbert Classic.
The Blossoms (4-0)
combined for 11 three-pointers, led by senior Addie
Lees (Plainview, Texas) who connected on 4-of-8
attempts. Lees added four more field goals and two
free-throws to lead the game with 22 points.
Lees along with freshman
teammate Jerica Hubard (Ashdown, Ark.) were named
to the all-tournament team, while Hubard earned the
tournament’s most outstanding player award.
Hubard led the Blossoms
with 16 points in the win over Missouri-St. Louis on
Friday and turned in another good performance in the win
over West Florida (2-5) with 13 points and seven
rebounds. She was 5-of-9 from the field while also
racking up a pair of steals.
Freshman Taylor Clark
(Searcy, Ark.) continued her impressive inaugural
campaign as a Blossom with 19 points in the win, giving
her three games this season with at least 10 points. She
went 7-of-11 from the field, including a 3-of-5 mark
from behind the three-point line.
In the first half, UAM
jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead with less than two
minutes used off the clock thanks in part to a pair of
successful three-pointers from Clark.
West Florida did manage to
grab the lead at the 14:01 mark with a three-pointer
from Amy Drake. UAM re-gained the lead when senior
Andrea Dubose (Hickory, Miss.) was fouled on a
three-point attempt. Dubose sunk all three of her foul
shots to give the Blossoms a 16-13 lead with 13:08 left
in the opening half.
UAM then took control of
the game, extending its lead to as much as 15 with less
than a minute remaining in the half to give the team a
47-34 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, the
Blossoms improved their team field goal percentage by
almost one point, while the Argonauts only shot 35
percent to allow UAM to pull out to a 20-point lead with
10 minutes left in regulation.
From there, UAM stretched
its lead to 25 with a three-pointer by Clark to give the
Blossoms and 82-57 advantage with just under four
minutes left. Hubard nailed two jumpers in the final
minute to give UAM its final edge of 92-61.
From the charity stripe,
UAM shot 70.4 percent, connecting on 19-of-27 attempts.
