NATCHITOCHES, La. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team could not overcome the hot three-point shooting of the Northwestern State Lady Demons in an 86-69 loss in exhibition play Friday night.

In the first half, the Blossoms led for much of the first eight minutes, including their largest lead of five points at the 15:29 mark by a score of 7-2. Northwestern State proved to be a slow-starting team, responding to the Blossom lead with a pair of significant scoring runs, forcing UAM to play catch-up for the remainder of the half.

The first run came from the 12:35 mark and lasted just over two minutes. That scoring run increased the Lady Demon lead to seven points. The second came from the 7:57 mark and stretched almost four minutes. Senior guard Sharlene Murphy (Coldwater, Miss.) ended the draught with a three-pointer, trimming the Lady Demon lead to 28-21 with 4:51 left in the half.

The Blossoms posted a comeback in the last four minutes of the first half, trimming the Lady Demon lead from 11 points to just one point at 38-37 at the halftime break. Senior guard Tasha Owens (Fox, Ark.) first trimmed the lead with a three-pointer with around 1:30 left, followed by a jumper from freshman forward Jerica Hubard (Ashdown, Ark.) with just over a minute. Sophomore guard Bethaney Turner (Mountain View, Ark.) ended the first half scoring with a pair of free-throws.

Senior guard Andrea Dubose (Hickory, Miss.) was responsible for the first five Blossoms points, including a field goal to open the scoring at the 18 minute mark, followed by a three-pointer just 40 seconds later, giving the Blossoms their second lead of the game.

In the second half, the two squads exchanged baskets before sophomore forward Erika Brown (Shreveport, La.) tied the game for the third time with a jumper at the 18:30 mark to make the score 41-all.

From that point, the threes started falling for the Lady Demons, while the Blossom turnovers increased, allowing NSU to create another significant scoring run. The Lady Demons held the Blossoms scoreless for over four minutes, while scoring 13 points. Junior Monica Perkins-Miller (Houston, Texas) ended the draught with a pair of free-throws with 13:52 left in the game.

The Lady Demons continued their impressive three-point shooting to seal the comfortable win. As a team, they shot at or above 50 percent from the beyond the arc for the entire game, while finishing the game with a 12-of-20 performance.

Individually for the Blossoms, Perkins-Miller led the team with 13 points, while also grabbing six rebounds. Junior Nicole Lowe (Jackson, Miss.) also reached double-digits with 10 points after shooting 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Northwestern State was led by Brooke Shepard’s 16 points. She shot 4-of-8 from the field, including a 4-of-7 performance from beyond the arc.

Due to the exhibition status for UAM, the Blossom’s record was not affected, remaining 8-3. Northwestern State improved to 7-5.

The Blossoms continue exhibition play tomorrow (Saturday) with a 4:30 p.m. contest at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
