January 28, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Sophomore Bethaney Turner has been
named the Gulf South Conference West
Division Player of the Week after
solid performances in both of the
Blossom’s victories over the past
week.
Turner (Mountain View, Ark.)
started her player of the week
campaign with nine points and four
assists in the team’s 82-51 win over
Henderson State. Two days later, she
turned in her career high of 25
points in a 94-89 overtime win over
Harding.
In the win over Harding, she scored
15 of her points in the first half.
“When I signed Bethaney, this is
what I expected,” said UAM head
coach Chris Ratcliff. “It
took her a little longer to get
acclimated to the system, but she
came through when we needed her to.
She had two very good games and
stepped up big against Harding and
had a career night. I am very
excited for her to get this award
and I hope she continues to play
great.”
In
both games combined, she connected
on 11-of-17 field goal attempts,
6-of-8 three-pointers and a perfect
6-of-6 from the charity stripe. She
also tallied a total of 11 assists.
Turner is the second UAM player to
earn player of the week honors this
season. Junior Nicole Lowe won the
award on November 25, 2008.
