MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s
basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Gulf South
Conference West Division.
UAM, which finished fourth last year, shocked the league with an upset
over No. 7 West Georgia in the GSC quarterfinals. UAM’s chances of
winning the GSC crown was eliminated by Arkansas Tech in the
semi-finals.
To start the 2008-09 season, UAM received two third and fourth place
votes, while also having three fifth place votes.
Delta State was voted the pre-season favorite, followed, in order, by
Arkansas Tech, Harding, UAM, Christian Brothers, Henderson State,
Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas.
Senior
guard Andrea Dubose (Hickory, Miss.) was named to the five-member
pre-season All-GSC West team. Dubose is UAM’s returning leading scorer
at 13.3 points per game during the 2007-08 season. Along with other
impressive statistics, that average earned her post-season All-GSC
second team honors. She was also named to the GSC All-Tournament Team
for her impressive play in the GSC Championship Tournament.
Dubose joins Arkansas Tech’s Amanda Grappe, Christian Brothers’ Crystal
Shelton, Harding’s Catherine McMenamy and Southern Arkansas’ Goldie
White as this season’s pre-season picks.
The Blossoms open their season on Saturday, November 1 with an
exhibition game against Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. Tipoff is set
for 7:05 p.m.
