April 6, 2009
Contact: Brian Ramsey, UAM Sports Information

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior guard Andrea Dubose was selected to the 2009 Winter Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team, while seven other UAM basketball players earned spots on the GSC Honor Roll.

Just over a month ago, Dubose earned her second consecutive spot on the All-GSC basketball team prior to leading her team to a berth in the GSC Championship game, which ultimately was good enough to clinch a spot in the NCAA regional tournament. Now, at the culmination of her two-year career at UAM, the Hickory, Miss. native earns her first academic selection with a 3.24 cumulative grade point average and is on pace to graduate with a degree in business and marketing.

The Cotton Blossoms tied Arkansas Tech for the league-high in number of GSC Honor Roll selections with seven.
In alphabetical order:
Andrea Dubose, Sr., 3.24 GPA, Business/Marketing
Jerica Hubbard, Fr., 3.00 GPA, Health and Physical Education
Addie Lees, Sr., 3.73 GPA, Health and Physical Education
Sharlene Murphy, Sr., 3.35 GPA, Health and Physical Education
Tasha Owens, Sr., 3.58 GPA, Exercise Science
Monica Perkins-Miller, Jr., 3.06 GPA, Health and Physical Education
Yelitza Rivera, Jr., 3.21 GPA, Biology

“This says a lot for the progress of our program,” said head coach Chris Ratcliff. “I am very proud of our team for the continued progress we are making both academically and athletically.”

Representing the men’s basketball team, senior guard Deron Brown earned his second consecutive spot on the honor roll with a 3.13 GPA. Brown is on pace to graduate with a degree in business administration.

The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives in a joint vote. To be selected, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and must be a starter or significant contributor to its respective squad. No institution is allowed to vote for its own student-athletes. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.

To be selected to the GSC Honor Roll, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA and be an active member of its respective squad.
