Blossoms Win Overtime Thriller Over Henderson State
February 21, 2008

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – University of Arkansas at Monticello’s junior guard Sharlene Murphy (Coldwater, Miss.) scored all of her 12 points after halftime, leading the Cotton Blossoms to a thrilling overtime win at Henderson State with a final score of 90-87.

Also scoring all of their points after halftime was senior guard Gemma Gibson (Dodd City, Texas), who tallied seven points while handling the ball against a Henderson State defense that pressured UAM the entire game.

Gibson nailed a jumper off the backboard with 14 seconds remaining in the game to give the Blossoms a 2-point lead, which was followed by a HSU turnover with only three seconds on the clock.

On the inbound pass, Murphy was fouled by HSU’s Chanlee Bottoms, but UAM was assessed two technical fouls, one for two many players on the court and one for an unsportsmanlike action from the UAM coaching staff. Murphy sunk one of her free-throws, while HSU’s Katie Williams sunk three foul shots to tie the game at 77-all, which was the final score at the buzzer.

UAM forced seven HSU turnovers in the last three minutes of the second half and the overtime period to gain a five-point lead at 90-85. HSU’s Candy Hall nailed a lay-up with 16 seconds, but it was too late, as the Blossoms won their sixth GSC game of the season, putting them in a tie for third place in the division.

True freshman Erika Brown (Shreveport, La.) scored a career high in points in single game with 20 points. Dubose finished with a game-high 22 points – shared with HSU’s Jazmine Ellis. Freshman Janette Thompson (Hot Springs, Ark.) scored 19 points in the contest.

The win improves UAM to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in the GSC, while HSU drops to 14-10 and 5-6 in the GSC.

The next action for the Blossoms is Saturday, Feb. 23, when the team hosts No. 12 Arkansas Tech at 2 p.m. in the Steelman Fieldhouse. The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live through UAM’s athletic website by logging on to uamsports.com.
